How is Negative Marking Calculated?
Negative marking is a system used in competitive exams to penalize incorrect answers. To calculate your score, we use the following formula:
For example, in UPSC Prelims, each question carries 2 marks. The penalty is 1/3rd of the marks allotted to the question (approx 0.66 marks). If you get 10 correct and 5 wrong, your score would be:
(10 × 2) - (5 × 0.66) = 20 - 3.33 = 16.67
Common Negative Marking Schemes
- UPSC Civil Services: 1/3rd Deduction
- SSC CGL: 0.50 Marks (per 2 mark Q)
- JEE Main: 1 Mark Deduction (per 4 mark Q)
- NEET: 1 Mark Deduction (per 4 mark Q)
